Back boilers were popular in the 1970s and '80s but are old-fashioned nowadays
What’s a back boiler?
Back boilers are an old style of boiler that was popular from around 1960 until the 1980s. With a back boiler, the unit is fitted behind a fireplace and provides hot water both for central heating and household use.
Back boilers have fallen out of fashion in recent years, particularly with the mass adoption of modern condensing combi boilers, which are significantly more efficient. In general, most people with back boilers have already converted to combi boilers, however there are still a number of back boilers in service today.
Is a back boiler the best boiler for you?
For the vast majority of households, installing a new back boiler is not going to be a possibility.
While a modern high-efficiency back boiler was in production by Baxi, this has now been discontinued. You may still be able to find a back boiler for sale through a plumbers merchant or specialised dealer, but in general they are not available.
If you already have a back boiler, it’s generally best to replace it with a new high efficiency combi boiler. This is often a relatively straightforward process, although it will often involve moving pipework and gas lines.
Back boilers are usually very reliable, and so for some homes which still have them, it can be worth leaving them in place.
